TfGM became one of 15 beneficiaries of a £78 million grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) awarded to Greater Manchester. This significant funding enabled energy efficiency upgrades to more than 150 public buildings across the city-region – a massive opportunity to make forward-thinking choices and see the positives of renewable energy.
With funding secured, TfGM engaged Zenergi to consult, design, project manage and implement renewable energy and energy-efficient technology across eight sites. The challenge was on a city-wide scale: transform multiple facilities, including a nine-storey head office, with solutions that would dramatically reduce carbon emissions while delivering meaningful cost savings.
The challenge of tackling climate change demands leadership across sectors. As the organisation responsible for the transport infrastructure in a city as sprawling as Greater Manchester, TfGM is uniquely positioned to be a positive influence on the region and reduce environmental impact. Their commitment to the Greater Manchester five-year environment plan demonstrates how public sector bodies can lead by example in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
By implementing comprehensive energy solutions across multiple sites, TfGM has been able to make a positive contribution at scale. And it’s not more expensive to go green: their annual cost savings will have them on track to save over £1m within 6 years. This project showcases how strategic investment in renewable technology can deliver both environmental and financial benefits, creating a virtuous cycle of sustainable development.
The Zenergi team are particularly proud of this project. It shows the power of combining public sector commitment and scale with private sector expertise. It’s impressive to see the transformation across TfGM's sites, but even more exciting is the ripple effect this could have. By reducing their carbon footprint so significantly while making savings to their operational costs, TfGM is setting a great standard for sustainable public services."

Our end-to-end approach to energy efficiency transformed TfGM’s operations:
Heating transformation: We installed New Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) systems for heating and domestic hot water across several sites, including TfGM's nine-storey head office.
Intelligent control: We brought in a comprehensive Building Energy Management System (BEMS) upgrade, linking back to a front-end system at head office, enabling better control and energy monitoring across all sites.
Solar power: We installed Solar PV totalling around 530kW across all sites, with battery storage at the larger Trafford depot, reducing electricity costs and reliance on the grid.
Future-proofing: The combined solutions have given TfGM more stability in the face of potential energy price volatility while steadily progressing toward their 2038 carbon neutrality target.
