How climate change is impacting education – and what schools can do

A new report published by the Department for Education (DfE) has highlighted the growing threat climate change poses to the delivery of education in the UK. Drawing on the latest UK Climate Change Risk Assessment and DfE’s own review, the report outlines key climate-related risks affecting school environments, and why urgent action is needed.

Three main climate risks are identified in the new report:

  • Overheating
Indoor temperatures in some UK schools are already reaching 35 °C, making classrooms nearly uninhabitable for learning.
If emissions continue unchecked, schools could experience up to eight extreme heat days per year by 2100.
The cumulative effect of heat could reduce learning capacity equivalent to losing 12 school days annually.
  • Flooding
Surface water, river, and sea flooding are increasing threats to school buildings, playgrounds, and access routes.
A growing number of schools are located in flood-prone areas, putting continuity of education at risk.
  • Water scarcity
Climate-induced droughts and reduced rainfall could affect water availability for sanitation, cooling, and hygiene – essential for safe school operations.

What is the DfE doing?

In response, the Department for Education is:

  • Conducting climate risk assessments across the school estate, in partnership with the Met Office and UCL.
  • Preparing to publish updated climate risk guidance for schools.
  • Developing comprehensive climate action plans, fostering sustainability leadership, and enhancing resilience across the education system.

Zenergi's view

This report reinforces what many in the education sector are already seeing. Climate risks like heatwaves and flooding are no longer future challenges, they're happening right now. Schools have a unique opportunity to lead the way in building climate resilience, not only by futureproofing their buildings but also by educating and empowering the next generation. We know schools are feeling the squeeze of ever-more cuts to valuable funding. But with the right guidance and support, schools can make meaningful savings and reinvest it to mitigate risk and reduce carbon emissions.”
