What is MID Approval and why do you need it

What is MID approval and why do you need It?

For a long time, gas and electricity meters only had to meet the requirements set out in the 1986 Gas Act and the 1989 Electricity Act. However, since October 2006, the landscape has evolved significantly.

What has changed?

In 2006, the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) came into effect. This directive consolidated the requirements for 10 different types of measuring instruments, including many active energy meters. It ensures uniformity and accuracy across the EU. Furthermore, the directive was updated in 2016, adding more rigor to the standards.

What does it mean for you?

If you own a commercial property, it’s your responsibility to ensure that all your gas and electricity meters comply with MID standards. Without MID approval, you could inadvertently breach metering rules and regulations.

The legislation applies to both main incoming meters and sub-meters. Sub-meters, in particular, are critical if you recharge tenants for electricity use. If the sub-meters lack MID approval, tenants are legally entitled to dispute invoices unless specific provisions are outlined in the lease agreement. This could lead to financial and legal complications for property owners.

How do you identify if your meter is MID approved?

Determining whether your meter is MID approved is straightforward. MID-approved meters can be identified by specific markings, including:

  • CE marking
  • MID marking (featuring the letter “M”)
  • Year of manufacture
  • Four-digit code denoting the approving body

If these markings aren’t visible, there’s a good chance your meter isn’t compliant. However, Zenergi can assist by verifying the status of your meters and providing a path to compliance if needed.

How can Zenergi help?

Our team has extensive experience helping property managers and owners navigate MID regulations. For instance, we recently assisted a property management company in identifying non-compliant meters installed post-2016. These meters were replaced with MID-approved alternatives, ensuring the company adhered to regulations and avoided potential legal issues.
