Non-half-hourly meter exchanges

Get a head start on gathering insightful consumption data

Electricity is traded in the market in half-hourly periods. However, most consumers are settled on a ‘non-half-hourly’ basis, which means the electricity they use at different times during the day is estimated.

Half-hourly smart meters can provide a more accurate understanding of how much electricity is being consumed within every half hour of the day. This accuracy means National Grid can balance the network better, helping to ensure that the electricity needed to power homes and businesses is available when it is needed.

New regulation is coming into force which means that every organisation’s electricity will need to be settled on a half-hourly basis. By October 2026 all electricity meters will need to be half-hourly. Don’t get left behind. If your meter is one of the circa 30 million affected by the regulation, it will need to be upgraded.
By taking action now, you’ll gain early access to the benefits half-hourly metering brings:

  • Enhanced monitoring and reporting

  • Accurate billing without the need for manual meter reads

  • Gain insight into consumption patterns and usage to support energy efficiency programmes

  • Access support to set and track sustainability and net zero targets

Key features and benefits

Meet your regulatory obligations

Market-wide half-hourly metering is coming. Take control and ensure your organisation is compliant with the necessary meter upgrade ahead of time by preparing now.

Drive energy, cost and carbon reductions

You can’t manage it if you don’t measure it. Easily access your organisation’s consumption data and drill into reports on a granular level to identify anomalies, analyse historic trends and compare costs month-by-month or year-by-year.

Support sustainability and net zero targets

With Net Zero 2050 in our sights, it is more critical than ever that we are all focused on smarter energy consumption. Half-hourly metering can help you get a better hold on your position today to help take tangible steps to reduce your energy use and carbon emissions.

Better budgeting for energy

With non-half-hourly metering, you can define an observation period and drill into the detail on an organisation level, or down to a specific meter point(s). With this insight, you can forward predict your expenditure in an informed and simple manner.
