The Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement programme is now live, with the first wave of migrations beginning for non-domestic customers from October 2025, with additional waves every six months. By mid-2027, all electricity meters in both organisations and households will be settled on a half-hourly basis.
MHHS is a regulatory change that will ensure all electricity meters in the UK are read and settled every 30 minutes, instead of the current estimated billing system for non-half-hourly (NHH) meters. This will improve accuracy, efficiency and transparency in energy usage and billing.
MHHS is part of the UK’s plan to modernise its energy market and support sustainability goals. By measuring energy usage more accurately, the system will be better equipped to integrate renewable energy, reduce waste and improve grid management.
MHHS will impact every organisation. Customers may see cost increases due to the higher expense of managing half-hourly meters. Suppliers will likely pass these costs on through standing charges or additional billing line items.
However, MHHS also brings opportunities for savings, with more accurate billing, improved energy insights and the potential to reduce costs by shifting usage to off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper. We believe those that engage early will better understand the changes and be positioned to capitalise on the potential benefits.
It will completely change the way it’s metered and also the way it’s invoiced and will bring extra costs too. So we’re working to take away all the stress and organisation of that and to make sure that customers are not adversely affected.”

Join Tim Golding, Zenergi’s Supplier Manager, for a live webinar on 22 October. What Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) means for your energy budget will help you understand what MHHS means specifically for organisations like yours, whether you already have a half-hourly meter or are one of the circa 30,000 that will be affected by the upgrade. We’ll help you understand how to prepare for the transition and leverage opportunities to optimise costs and flexibility.
Since you can identify exactly when you’re consuming, you can look at ways to reduce your consumption. For example, you may be able to identify what equipment you are using and what impact this has on your consumption – so you could decide to use them less frequently to reduce carbon or to use them at different times to reduce costs.”
