When Phase 2 of the government’s Low Carbon Skills Fund (LCSF) was announced, Danes Educational Trust recognised that the application timeframe was limited, and competition for the available funding would be high.
The Trust partnered with Zenergi to prepare its application and successfully secured a £39,000 grant. This funded the development of a comprehensive Trust-wide Heat Decarbonisation Plan. The aim was to identify the most cost-effective and strategic approach to transitioning away from fossil fuels.
With Zenergi’s expert guidance, Danes Educational Trust secured government funding to develop Heat Decarbonisation Plans and replace outdated gas boilers with sustainable air source heat pumps across all schools. Zenergi has been proactive in advising on funding and prioritising projects, including an LED lighting upgrade. The support has been invaluable in advancing our estates strategy and sustainability goals.

Zenergi carried out comprehensive energy and carbon site audits to establish the Trust’s carbon footprint and energy use.
Using a “fabric first” approach, the audits identified strategic measures to minimise energy consumption and eliminate fossil fuelled heating. Measures included upgrades to building elements, including walls, glazing and roofs. These enhancements would reduce heat loss and improve air tightness, thereby improving the thermal envelope and reducing the peak heat demand. The audits also established suitable replacements for traditional gas-fired boiler plant, stand-alone water heaters and gas catering appliances.
Development of the Heat Decarbonisation Plan paved the way for Danes Educational Trust to seek further funding under Phase 3c of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS). With Zenergi’s help preparing the application, the Trust secured an additional £127,000 to replace outdated gas boilers with energy-efficient air source heat pumps.
The projects gave the Trust confidence to explore further energy efficiency initiatives. This led to a collaboration with Zenergi on a phased LED lighting upgrade across its schools to reduce energy consumption and lower long-term maintenance costs.
