Shropshire Council: Supporting targeted energy efficiency and public sector compliance.

Shropshire Council’s vision, as set out in its Sustainability, Environment and Climate Change Policy, is to stabilise and progressively reduce its environmental footprint. The Council recognises its responsibility to remain compliant with energy regulation and to reduce its energy consumption. Zenergi is helping the Council achieve its vision with the provision of Display Energy Certificates, which it has carried out for over 10 years.

Case study highlights

A thermography inspection helps to prioritise maintenance, repairs and upgrades of buildings, based on areas of heat loss identified.

Zenergi provides a streamlined and efficient service for the delivery of Display Energy Certificates that not only ensures public bodies meet their regulatory obligations, but also helps to identify opportunities to enhance building energy efficiency.

Zenergi identified opportunities to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency within Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.

A streamlined and efficient compliance service

Zenergi has been managing the provision of Display Energy Certificates for Shropshire Council for over 10 years. The partnership ensures that the Council remains compliant with the mandatory energy regulation, with Zenergi taking care of the annual surveys and reports for 83 sites, in addition to carrying out 10-year certificates when required.

Zenergi provides a streamlined and efficient service for the delivery of Display Energy Certificates for the Council that not only ensures its public bodies meet their regulatory obligations, but also helps to identify opportunities to enhance building energy efficiency to reduce costs and the carbon footprint of each site.

Supporting net zero ambitions

Shropshire Council is working towards becoming carbon net-neutral by 2030 and assisting in the ambition for Shropshire as a whole to become carbon net-neutral in the same year. To support the programme, Zenergi identified opportunities to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency within Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.

Zenergi carried out a thermography inspection to provide thermal imaging analysis of the building. Infrared thermography inspections identify the thermal patterns detected in a building to help building managers prioritise maintenance, repairs and upgrades of the building, based on areas of heat loss identified.

Thermal imaging for building inspections detects moisture and water damage, energy loss and insulation issues, electrical problems and overheating, structural defects
and pest infestations. Using infrared cameras that see the radiated heat of equipment and infrastructure in real time, Zenergi carried out a detailed analysis of the building.

Targeted energy efficiency improvements

The main areas of heat loss were identified as the front door, the single glazed windows and the valves in the plant room. The service included a report detailing the findings, providing Shropshire Council with documented evidence to support targeted energy efficiency investments.

We have a streamlined service with Zenergi to allow us to maintain a rolling DEC programme across our schools and buildings, keeping it simple, to keep costs down. In addition to the provision of our DECs, having the support of Zenergi for projects such as the identification of heat loss in our buildings is very valuable and is helping us in the achievement of our net zero ambitions.

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) aims to promote energy efficiency within organisations, supporting the UK’s commitment to environmental targets. We help qualifying organisations understand how and where they are using the most energy and take care of the collation, calculations and reporting of energy consumption and carbon emissions for Scopes 1, 2 and 3.

Energy Performance Certificates

Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) indicate the intrinsic energy performance potential of a building using a rating system from A-G, where A is very efficient, and G is the least efficient. Ensuring a good energy rating is critical in this increasingly competitive environment as it will affect the rental and saleable value of your buildings and it also offers the opportunity to reduce tenants’ exposure to rising energy costs.

Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards

The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) aims to improve the energy efficiency of the national building stock. From April 2018, it became unlawful to grant new leases for non-domestic properties in England and Wales which do not meet the standard.
