Trinity School: Delivering energy and carbon savings through LED lighting

Hoping to fast track its net zero journey, Trinity School in Newbury engaged Zenergi to identify opportunities to lower its energy bills and release funds for investment in projects that will help its net zero ambitions and benefit its students.

Case study highlights

The school’s building lighting, emergency lighting and outdoor sports pitch lighting were upgraded with around 2,000 LED luminaires.

Annual carbon savings are estimated to be 50 tCO₂e.

The school will benefit from lower carbon emissions and reduced energy costs; ensuing safety and compliance; and a reduction in maintenance costs,

Zenergi provided advice on a range of energy efficiency projects that the school can implement over time

Challenge

From an initial project investment appraisal of the site, Zenergi identified the opportunities to implement different energy and carbon-saving projects. Zenergi then collated its findings; estimated costs; predicted revenue generation and carbon savings and presented it to the school’s key stakeholders. The presentation was met with great enthusiasm and the board chose to proceed with an LED lighting upgrade across the site.

Solution

Zenergi supported the school to begin a mass LED lighting project which would offer three major benefits to the school. The first being lower carbon emissions and reduced energy costs; the second being safety and compliance; and the third being a reduction in the school’s high maintenance costs, with an added benefit of creating revenue, since the school relies on the use of outdoor lighting to support clubs who hire the sports pitches outside of school hours.

The Zenergi team’s extensive experience in the industry allowed them to recommend a range of trusted LED installers, all with a credible history and performance that would carry out the work to the highest standard.

Result

  • The work upgraded the school’s building lighting, emergency lighting and outdoor sports pitch lighting with around 2,000 LED luminaires.
  • The LED installation will produce 67,000 hours of light. Based on a typical school year of 3,000 lighting hours, the project will keep Trinity School well-lit for 22 years.
  • Annual carbon savings are estimated to be 50 tCO₂e.
  • Zenergi’s presentation advised on a number of energy efficiency projects that the school can implement over time, from Electric Vehicle charging to Solar PV.

By engaging the top stakeholders of the school and fuelling their drive to reach net zero, Zenergi is helping guide the school and influence its staff and pupils.

We support the strategy to protect our environment and Zenergi’s team helped us to start implementing our ambitious plan to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions. We really value Zenergi’s experience in supporting schools and helping us to choose the most suitable provider for the LED lighting project. In addition, we have already started work on evaluating opportunities to generate energy and reduce our reliance on the grid. Zenergi always provided us with an excellent service and worked with the school’s stakeholders to ensure the work fully met the school’s needs. Thank you, Zenergi, for your continuous support.
