Top Tips to Avoid Energy Billing Overcharges

Top Tips to Avoid Energy Billing Overcharges

1. Verify your renewal dates:

  • Ensure your renewal date is accurate and that your new contract starts on time. This helps you avoid costly out-of-contract default rates.

2. Regular meter readings:

  • For gas and smaller electricity meters, suppliers only need to take a reading every two years. Avoid estimated bills by taking weekly or monthly readings and submitting them to your supplier.

3. Check meter readings at contract renewal:

  • When your contract renews, take a meter reading on the start date to ensure your final reading from the old contract matches the initial reading of the new one. Discrepancies can lead to higher charges if not caught early.

4. Confirm contract terms on your first bill:

  • After your contract renews, compare your new contract terms and rates with your first bill to ensure accuracy.

5. Track consumption:

  • Keep a record of your energy usage by comparing current consumption to the same period 12 months ago. A simple spreadsheet can help you monitor day/night usage and total costs.

6. VAT and CCE savings for schools:

  • If you’re a Foundation, VA/VC, Trust, or Academy school, you should only pay 5% VAT. This not only reduces your VAT but also exempts you from the Climate Change Levy (CCE), potentially saving thousands annually.
