Zen Family Voice: Meet our ‘Zen Way’ champions, also known as Zen Gurus!

Introduction

Our Zen Gurus represent and embody the Zen Way – our approach to operating successfully and that sense of pride in our mission that everyone feels great to be part of. Zen Gurus are people experts, listeners, advisers and influencers around the business. Taking care of our people and our way of doing things requires fantastic role models, a Zen Guru possesses the skills for helping people and is a point of call for our team for guidance or advice about anything in the business. The Guru’s role of offering support and challenge to their colleagues requires a high level of listening skills and empathy and our Gurus are also key to keeping #positiveenergy pumping around the business.

What is the Zen Way?

The Zen Way means different things to different people, but at it its core is the foundation that Zenergi is a family, and we look out for one another. To us the Zen Family means more than just working together to achieve great things, it also means supporting each other in all aspects of life. We’re on a mission to do things differently and the Zen Way encapsulates that, representing our culture and what makes us special and understanding the little things that make us who we are and why we are successful.

What does it take to become a Zen Guru?

Being a Zen Guru is an important role that requires training and development, which is why our Gurus begin by undertaking an in-depth four-day course to boost their natural role model skills. Training is delivered through our bespoke Zen Academy, Zenergi’s world-class internal training programme. The course covers self-development; supporting and developing Personal Development Plans (PDPs); developing and leading training sessions and directive coaching.

Once completed, Gurus are ready to take their skills to support and challenge the team in the Zen way…

Let’s hear from the Gurus themselves!

Meet a couple of our Zen Gurus to learn what they value in their role and how it has enabled them to help others in the Zen Family…

Jenny has been a Zen Guru since January 2021, she says:

There is often a misconception on what the Zen Guru entails… Some would say it’s an expert in their part of the business, but this is not the case! I would describe the Zen Guru role as someone who encapsulates the ‘Zen Way’ and looks to encourage and push their team mates to be the best they can be. I have not only developed personally from the additional training that comes with being a Zen Guru, but also helped mentor new and existing Zen family members, as well as guiding graduates as they take their first steps into their career.

I personally enjoy running training sessions with the team as it allows me to meet more people with that face-to-face experience. I believe it massively helps grow relationships and share where the company has come from and where we plan to go together collectively. It’s a great honour to be considered for the role and I enjoy what comes with it.”

Gill, a new recruit to the Zen Guru team gives us an overview of her time as a Guru so far and what she and her team values in their role…

I form part of the latest cohort of Gurus that completed the course in February 2022.  We are all relatively new to the role and have worked alongside the original Gurus to define our responsibilities and remit.  After some discussion the group agreed on a number of areas that we believe provide value to Zenergi and its employees. These are outlined below:

  1. Gurus support the people and the culture of the organisation. We also adhere to the core values and purpose of Zenergi acting as role models for the business.

  2. In this regard, we act as support to Team Leaders who cannot always be everywhere at once. For example, we remind people of the expected behaviours of a Zenergi employee, our values, our expectations.

  3. We provide support to all members of staff within the organisation, regardless of where they are based or what role they have.

  4. Our support can include being an ear to listen to issues of any kind, personal or work related.

  5. We support the wellbeing of all employees and can advise them on the great resources we provide as a business.

  6. Gurus support change in the business. We can become involved in the roll out of information and help to manage expectations.

  7. Gurus do not advise individuals that we can “fix” issues as the situation or resolution may be outside of our remit, but we can give people a shoulder to lean on, listen and help an individual to come to their own resolution or plan or action.

I believe this is what a guru is and can provide to the business.  We are available at any time to any member of the team and we will endeavour to provide support whenever possible.”
