Every NHS Trust faces the challenge of balancing exceptional patient care with environmental responsibility. Brighton General Hospital chose to tackle both in a project with a blended vision. Working with Sussex Community NHS Trust, the Zenergi team helped them transform their energy infrastructure from the ground up. By replacing outdated steam systems with modern, efficient heating, we’ve created a blueprint for sustainable healthcare that saves money, cuts carbon and supports better patient outcomes.

What do you need to know

Our partnership with Brighton General Hospital began with a Carbon Trust co-funded financial and technical feasibility study. We assessed their aging steam boiler plant, distribution networks and condensate return systems to identify practical options and discover energy saving potential.

The challenge was significant: we needed to replace complex central infrastructure without interrupting the staff’s ability to deliver critical services in a working hospital environment. Taking the hospital’s operations into account, we planned a comprehensive transformation that would include new high-efficiency local condensing boilers, automated building management systems and complete domestic hot water system upgrades. It was an approach designed to deliver immediate energy savings as well as supporting long-term sustainability goals.

What Brighton General Hospital thought

This project has resulted in the site’s carbon emissions being reduced by over 30% and has assisted the Trust in exceeding its statutory carbon emission reduction targets – contributing to being awarded ‘Winner’ in the category of Good Corporate Citizen in the prestigious Health Service Journal awards."

Why it matters

Healthcare facilities require reliable, efficient energy systems that create a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff. Our decentralisation approach for Brighton General Hospital created exactly that: a robust, modern heating infrastructure that performs better, while using less energy.

By replacing the large, inefficient central steam boiler plant with independent local condensing boilers, we eliminated distribution losses and created precise zone control. The new automated building management system provides centralised heating control across the entire site, optimising performance in real-time.

We also transformed the domestic hot water systems, replacing old calorifiers with high-efficiency plate heat exchangers and point-of-use water heaters. This eliminated secondary circulation losses and improved hot water availability throughout the hospital.

What we think

Working in a live hospital environment requires meticulous planning and flawless execution. Every decision could impact patient care, so we engineered solutions that enhance both comfort and efficiency. The 30% carbon reduction proves that NHS Trusts can achieve ambitious sustainability targets without compromising on service delivery."
