Our latest Greener Schools Index data* highlights the scale of the opportunity and where schools are already making progress:
Our advice? Start small and focus on actions that can make a real difference for your pupils.
At Zenergi, we help schools bring green skills and careers to life. Our graduate scheme has kickstarted the careers of 38 climate change specialists since 2022, and we’ve recently opened our doors to school pupils completing work experience.
These placements give young people hands-on insight into sustainability careers, helping them develop confidence, skills, and aspirations. Pupils see what a career in climate action looks like in practice, and understand how they can make a difference.
Through ongoing collaborations with St James High School and Linlithgow Academy, our team regularly delivers career development workshops tailored to pupils’ needs.
These workshops cover a range of topics, from exploring green career pathways to mastering interview techniques and building strong CVs.
When planning your own careers events, consider how varied your exhibitors are. Including organisations from the sustainability, energy and climate sectors can show students the wide range of career possibilities in tackling climate change. Our People team have been delighted to attend several school careers fairs, opening
Our team also delivers presentations on sustainability, energy, and climate change, helping pupils understand the issues and empowering them to take action.
Last month, our Director of Net Zero, Nick Drake, shared his passion for protecting our planet in visits to two very different schools; a special educational needs school and a secondary school year 9 group.

“Thank you for coming to visit us at NCA! The presentation went really well – it was a pleasure to have you all in to be apart our school day. It was also great to see the learners engaged in the session for 40 minutes!”

“We’re always looking for ideas on how to spark students’ curiosity about sustainability and green careers. Thank you to Nick Drake for delivering an engaging session on net zero, climate change, and green careers. Our students explored real-world applications, learned how they can drive positive change, and left inspired about their future pathways. This talk gave our pupils opportunities to think critically about the world and their role in shaping it. “

Nick’s sessions followed an online presentation delivered by Client Partner, Alex Kellogg. Hear what her customer had to say:
“Sustainability is a key focus for Eko Trust. As part of the collaborative work that our schools do on this area, we have a pupil Eco Council, where pupils and the sustainability leads come together once a term for a virtual meeting. We always invite a guest speaker to help educate and think about particular areas of sustainability. We were delighted that Zenergi’s Alex Kellogg agreed to come along to our most recent meeting. Alex explained what Zenergi does to help the Trust combat climate change, and ran a couple of interactive quizzes, which got very competitive! At the end of the session pupils were asked to think of what they would do in their schools to help reduce energy consumption and waste in their schools. These pledges will be added to the sustainability action plans that our schools are busy compiling.
This was a really helpful session and really got our Eco Council thinking about practical ways to save energy – and therefore save money. At a time when school budgets are really constrained, this is a win-win scenario!”

Schools can help close the green skills and careers gap by giving pupils real world sustainability experiences, inspiring presentations, and access to diverse career pathways.
Zenergi supports this through workshops, partnerships, and hands on opportunities that build confidence and empower young people to take climate action.
